Where Is the Knee Pain?
Choose where you feel it most. See what doctors usually think about there, and how a home visit can help.
Common causes doctors think about
What it can be linked to
- Pain around or behind the kneecap, often worse on stairs or after sitting
- Strain of the tendon below the kneecap from running or jumping
- Wear in the joint behind the kneecap
This is general information, not a diagnosis. Only an examination, and sometimes a scan, can tell what is causing your pain. If your knee is badly swollen after an injury, looks out of shape or you cannot put weight on it, get urgent care.
Who This Service Is For
Every knee story is different. These are the people we visit most often.

Older adults with arthritis
Stiff, aching knees can make stairs and walks harder. A doctor checks your knee at home and helps you stay active safely.

Step 1 of 5
Book online
Pick a time that suits you and tell us a little about your knee: when it started, what makes it worse, and any past injuries or surgery.
Arthritis or Injury?
They can feel similar, but they usually start very differently. Here is how the two often compare.
General information only, not a diagnosis. Some knees have both arthritis and an injury. The doctor examines your knee and arranges a scan if one is needed.
Simple Knee Care Steps
Small, steady steps that help many knees feel better day to day.
Rest, but keep moving
Rest a sore knee, but keep it moving gently so it does not stiffen.
Cold pack for a fresh injury
For a fresh minor injury, a wrapped cold pack for short spells can ease swelling.
Supportive footwear
Cushioned, supportive shoes take some strain off your knees every day.
A healthy weight
Keeping to a healthy weight eases the load your knees carry with each step.
Exercises from your physio
Strengthening the muscles around the knee helps, using exercises your physio suggests.
Get it checked if it lasts
If pain, swelling or stiffness does not settle, book a check rather than waiting.
General tips only. Always follow your own doctor's or physio's advice, and get urgent care for a badly swollen, deformed or very painful knee after an injury.
