Where Is the Knee Pain?

Choose where you feel it most. See what doctors usually think about there, and how a home visit can help.

Around the kneecap

Common causes doctors think about

What it can be linked to

  • Pain around or behind the kneecap, often worse on stairs or after sitting
  • Strain of the tendon below the kneecap from running or jumping
  • Wear in the joint behind the kneecap
How a home visit helpsThe doctor checks how your kneecap moves, looks for swelling and advises on activity, footwear and physio if helpful.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Only an examination, and sometimes a scan, can tell what is causing your pain. If your knee is badly swollen after an injury, looks out of shape or you cannot put weight on it, get urgent care.

InjuryIf you cannot bear weight, the knee looks out of shape or swells a lot: urgent care

General information only, not a diagnosis. Some knees have both arthritis and an injury. The doctor examines your knee and arranges a scan if one is needed.

Simple Knee Care Steps

Small, steady steps that help many knees feel better day to day.

Step 1

Rest, but keep moving

Rest a sore knee, but keep it moving gently so it does not stiffen.

Step 2

Cold pack for a fresh injury

For a fresh minor injury, a wrapped cold pack for short spells can ease swelling.

Step 3

Supportive footwear

Cushioned, supportive shoes take some strain off your knees every day.

Step 4

A healthy weight

Keeping to a healthy weight eases the load your knees carry with each step.

Step 5

Exercises from your physio

Strengthening the muscles around the knee helps, using exercises your physio suggests.

Step 6

Get it checked if it lasts

If pain, swelling or stiffness does not settle, book a check rather than waiting.

General tips only. Always follow your own doctor's or physio's advice, and get urgent care for a badly swollen, deformed or very painful knee after an injury.

When to Get Urgent Help

Most knee problems can be checked at home. These signs cannot wait and need emergency care straight away.

Knee looks out of place

After a fall, twist or knock, the knee or kneecap looks bent, shifted or deformed.

Cannot put any weight on the leg

You cannot stand or take even a few steps on the leg after an injury.

Hot, red, swollen knee with fever
